Cops: Wrentham Man Leads Police on High-Speed Chase, Manhunt

Dedham Police arrested Stephen Kirby, 47, following an hour-long pursuit early Monday morning.

A Wrentham man allegedly led police on a car chase through Dedham Square, and later caused an hour-long, multi-agency manhunt through a Court Street neighborhood.

Stephen Kirby, 47, was arrested and charged early Monday morning with violating several driving-related laws, according to police reports.

Kirby allegedly sped down Washington Street near Incinerator Road at 58 mph, according to officer Matthew Blake. Blake pulled behind Kirby's 2003 Chrysler 300 Series, and attempted to pull it over. Instead, Blake reported, Kirby took off through the rotary at the intersection of Washington Street and Providence Highway and down toward High Street at an estimated 45 mph.

According to Blake, as Kirby approached Dedham Square, he reached upward of 70 mph, passing an MBTA bus and a car, crossing over the double-solid yellow line.

After two high-speed turns, Kirby hit a sign on the corner of Court Street and Richards Street, jumped out of his car and that's when the manhunt began, according to Dedham Police.

He was charged with:

  • leaving the scene of accident property damage
  • failure to stop for police
  • operating to endanger
  • operating after license revocation for habitual traffic offender
