This Week in News: Aug. 23 - Aug. 29

It's a week full of high school sports ramp-up, plus the usual summer suspects, but with a few twists.

A few things without hard and fast dates this week include construction crews placing a fence at the high school to map out the Avery School and athletic complex project. That, superintendent June Doe said, will shut down the parking lot at the top of the football field.

Monday - Dedham High School football practice and cheerleading camp for the 2010 season gets under way. Also, at the Endicott Estate, a lecture about illegal immigration will take place at 7 p.m.

Tuesday - The Private Ways committee will meet at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, and while the posted agenda looks empty, Churchill Park and parking is sure to come up. Also, Saint Mary of the Assumption Church will hold an open house for its Life Teen program, and the Town of Dedham will host a bake sale beginning at 9 a.m. at Town Hall.

Wednesday - Hit the Dedham Farmers Market in the Square with a live performance by the Grass Gypsys, then scoot down Providence Highway to the outside market at Legacy Place.

Thursday - Dedham athlets get into full swing as several teams begin practice and tryouts. Dedham High School's swimming and diving teams, volleyball, boys soccer, boys and girls cross country, field hockey and golf all kick off the 2010 campaign. Ursuline Academy also will start their tryouts for their soccer, swimming, volleyball and field hockey teams. New athletic director Mike O'Connor says tryouts will last through Saturday.

Friday - Heading into the final weekend of August, the Dedham Community House will show "The Rookie" for free. Also, be on the lookout for what to do over the weekend to enjoy one of the last weekends of summer.

Saturday - While most baseball concluded by now, you can swing down to Fairbanks Park to watch the James G. Police Memorial Wiffle Ball Classic.

Sunday - If you missed, or just miss, the concerts at Endicott this summer, you can get your fill of symphonic notes at on the common in Norwood. Also, you can hop over to the Dedham Square Country Market for some unique shopping, or go for a dive either in synchronized style or just to play around.
