Editors' Picks: Favorite Songs of 2012

Editor's Note: The following is part of a special "end-of-the-year" series in which local editors from your nearby Patch towns highlight their favorites in various topics.  

What was your favorite song from 2012? 

Jeff Sullivan - Editor, Mansfield Patch

David Byrne and St. Vincent - "Who." I'm a sucker for baritone saxophones, what can I say? If you haven't checked out this song, you should. It's a rocky dance number with amazing vocals from both Byrne and St. Vincent.

"Take a Walk" by Passion Pit marked the return of one of the best bands to come out of Boston in recent memory. With an upbeat song about financial struggles and trying to make it, Passion Pit once again proved that even the most serious of issues can be expressed with an electropop beat.

I may be in the minority, but cannot get behind "Gagnam Style" or "Call Me Maybe." Instead I have to go with Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know." This artist and song came out of nowhere, but was so catchy that stations of different genres were playing it. And playing it, and playing it, and playing it...

Well the album technically came out in the fall of 2011, but since most of the song's popularity came in 2012 I'm going to go with "Shake it Out" by Florence And The Machine. It's off the band's second album "Ceremonials," which is just as good, if not better than the first, with a lot of great songs. A couple of my favorites aside from "Shake it Out," are "Seven Devils" and "No Light, No Light."

"Drunk on You" by Luke Bryan. When I think back on summer 2012 I will hear this song playing. A true summer anthem for any country music fan, Bryan blew up the radio with this tune.

"Keep Me in Mind" - Zac Brown Band. I'm a huge fan of the Zac Brown Band and I think the song "Keep Me in Mind" is among my favorite of theirs. It came out earlier this year and I had the pleasure of seeing them perform it twice over the summer. Zac Brown transcends country music and is an all-around solid rock band.

Is there any doubt the song of the year is Carly Rae Jepsen's deep and meaningful "Call Me Maybe?" OK, deep and meaningful is definitely a stretch, but the song sure is catchy and was the anthem of Summer 2012. Who didn't make a spoof/cover video of this song? As the year comes to a close we're just left to wonder, has anyone called Carly, maybe?

I am not worried about the members of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros because their music is nowhere near as popular as it should be. But I am worried about the taste of the American public that this band has not reached the level of stardom it should have achieved. The group has lots of members and lots of fans too. You can even hear a couple of its songs in commercials. But the band still seems to have not "broken through."

This year, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros had another winner with "Man on Fire." It is a beautiful song that I won't even attempt to describe (how do you describe music?). And there is a great video to go with it.
