Playoffs!? You Kidding Me? ( & other Boston sports writings)

Boston Hometown Teams. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Bruins and Celtics playoffs, Red Sox getting it together and football? Remember football?

So, for me, it is surely not enough to host my Television show on Dedham TV called The Wicked Awesome Sports Show. I MUST do more. So here goes. We have all seen that awful bumper sticker that reads “everyone is entitled to my opinions,” that is what I will do, with sports, to a lesser degree and in a less demanding sort of way.

While watching the Bruins wrap up a masterful, four game sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers, I couldn’t help but think “Wow, watching middle aged suited hockey executives high-fiving each other after a series win is embarrassing.” After analyzing that a little more, I thought, not only were they celebrating a well, deserved win, but General Manager Peter Chairelli could have been celebrating securing his job for at least another year. After all, they made it further than they did the previous year. The home town team also not only figured out that the power play is GOOD for them, but by the end of the series learned how to capitalize on said power play. With Marc Savard out indefinitely, the power play could continually be their Achilles heal.  Next for the Bruins: the storied franchise of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Did that read sarcastically? I think from now on I will start to put sarcasm in italics: The storied franchise of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

I can’t believe it has been 11 years since a frustrated Rick Pitino had stated that the likes of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish were NOT walking through that door to help the struggling 2000 Boston Celtics. After I sat and watched games 1 and 2 of the Celtics vs. Heat series, I had a hard time believing that even Kevin Garnett, Paul Peirce or Ray Allen had walked through the door…and we KNOW Kendrick Perkins hadn’t. After losing by 9 and 11 the scores made these games seem closer than they were. The Heat have lost 10 straight games on the parquet. The Celtics have that stat on their side. The old legs have been rested, but they still need EVERYONE to walk through that door.

What can I say about the hometown baseball team? They started off umm, a little rough. Some of the guys who we thought were sure things right out of the gate have struggled, most notably Carl Crawford. The “laser show” Dustin Pedroia is on pace to set a career high in whiffs. The brighter side of this young season: the rest of the division is not playing great and that is keeping the Red Sox in the hunt. Jonathan Papelbon remembered how to close games without walking the bases full and Jed Lowrie has broken out to become the bridge to Jose Iglesias they need him to be, so hold on, it’s a long season.

Last, real quick, there may not be a football season this year. Most people have sided with the players on this. I know that is a popular stance. I, however, side with the owners. They want more money, they NEED more money.  Now, put yourself in their shoes for a minute. Have you ever had to count change for breakfast in the morning? Or had to go to the gas station attendant and embarrassingly said "four dollars on pump 2 please?” In these tough economic times we have all had less money than we would need to be comfortable. Seriously, we wouldn't want our NFL owners having to swap their 2011 Cadillac Escalade ESV for a 2010 Cadillac Escalade EXT!!!
