Regular Season Complete, Boys Metrowest Begin Playoffs with Win …

When a team enters the playoffs, especially faced with elimination, there is a renewed sense of urgency that just can`t be matched. Every minute on the court, every decision you make, each pass, each shot, each play, all determine whether you`ll be packing your gear away for the season or moving on to play your next opponent.

That was the case this past weekend, as dozens of friends and family members filled the stands of the Dedham High School gym. The 8th grade boys, playing their final hoorah for Dedham in the Metrowest League, were paired up with a very talented team of their peers from Holliston.

The fact that the game was scheduled for early Sunday morning, coupled with “losing an hours sleep” thanks to Daylight Savings Time didn`t matter. All that did matter… was winning.

Last season, this same team entered the playoffs with a 12-0 undefeated record. They suffered a loss in as they moved forward, and instantly it was all over. This season has been different. Despite having more losses than wins, this team has stayed tough and has been within a basket or two in every game. At each practice, and after every game, Coach John Maida has kept his boys focused on the task at hand – become better basketball players!

Dedham opened their playoff game with a layup from Corey Kilroy and 5 quick points from Dylan Maida. Early in the first quarter, Brandon Ruiz made his presence on the court known, with a steal and breakaway basket. Dedham took an early 19-12 lead and were determined to never look back. The first half ended with the home team leading 31-19 and John Maida on top of his squad!

As the third quarter began, the speed and intensity of play increased. Neither team was going to give up an easy basket, and every point scored was certainly earned. Fouls in the third quarter were abundant, and Dedham compiled 8 steals that lead to points. The boys from Holliston weren`t about to give up though, and scored 19 points to keep the game close 47-38.

The fourth quarter began and both teams were well aware, that in 8 minutes of play, one of them would be going home. Davin Sweeney was back in form, scoring a season high 20 points. Brandon Ruiz had a record 12 point game followed by one of Dylan Maida`s strongest games of the season (11 pts – 2 rebounds – 4 assists – 3 steals). Liam Dorsey, always a force, contributed in every category (4 pts – 2 rebounds – 3 assists – 2 steals).

The continued hustle of Corey Kilroy (6 pts – 4 rebounds), Brian Tavares (2 pts – 2 rebounds – 1 assist – 1 steal), and Kyle Micciche (2 pts – 1 steal) kept Dedham in the lead throughout. The smart play on the court of David Logan, Mark Rella and Ty Rowell, coupled with the support of Dan Labadini, secured a 57-48 victory for Dedham, with the chance to play this week against Arlington and (hopefully) the winner of a Melrose/Brookline game over the weekend.
