Saturday Night Subs, Fenway Style

Hang up the phone! Don't order your steak and cheese subs this weekend! Instead, make them at home. It's delicously satisfying and easier on the wallet!

Often, simple and easy can taste so good and just hit the spot. On my last grocery trip, I noticed they had piles of shaved steak displayed in the meat counter.  I’d made my own steak and cheese subs before, but I always went down the frozen food isle and grabbed the box of frozen steak meat.

Last time I did, I remembered them not tasting so good and ended up
throwing everything away (that drives me nuts and I’m sure you can relate).  So this time, I grabbed two packages of fresh shaved steak and decided I was going to make my own steak and cheese subs, Fenway style!

I hit the produce department and grabbed some fresh peppers
(green and red) as well as a bag of yellow onions. I grabbed some American cheese and good sized sub rolls.  This recipe made 8 decent size subs.

I cooked the peppers and onions separately and figured it was best to serve them on the side, since not everyone was going to pile the peppers and onions on their sub.

Not only was this a fun, no-fork-and-knife-needed dinner that everyone devoured, but I could also picture filling the sub rolls, cutting them in half or thirds and serving them on a big platter for the Pats game.

This would  also be something fun and different to serve at your next party, certainly kid-friendly.  Add a side bowl of the peppers and onions (add whatever you like: peppers with a little more heat, mushrooms in addition to the steak or in place of meat if you prefer no meat).  They will disappear!

Lisa’s Fenway Style Steak-n-Cheese Subs

2 pounds fresh shaved steak

5 tablespoons olive oil (divided)

3 medium yellow onions, sliced thin

1 red pepper, sliced thin

1 green pepper, sliced thin

Salt and pepper to taste

6 slices of American cheese (add more if you like
super-cheesy)

8 fresh sub rolls (ours package of rolls were labeled “grinder
rolls”)

Heat a nonstick skillet with 2 tablespoons olive oil.  Add the 2 lbs. of shaved steak and cook for approximately 12-15 minutes, turning and allowing to brown on all sides. Be sure to cook meat until all pink is gone. Season with salt and pepper.  Once fully cooked, add 6 slices of American cheese and cover so the cheese melts (About 1 minute). Stir meat and cheese mixture to distribute cheese evenly.

Meanwhile, in a separate skillet, heat the remaining 3 tablespoons of olive oil and add the sliced onions and peppers. Add a pinch of salt and pepper and cook until softened and brown, about 6-7 minutes.  The key here is to slice the peppers and onions thin so they are similar in size to the shaved steak.

Fill the rolls with the meat and cheese mixture.  Pile on the sauted peppers and onions.  You can add ketchup or other condiments of
your choice, as you please.  Enjoy!
