6 Things you Need to Know about Opening Day at Fenway Park

The Red Sox kick off their 103rd season Friday afternoon with a home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. Here are six things you need to know about opening day:

1. Gates Open at 11:35 a.m. - Gates open before noon, the game starts at XX and the Red Sox organization wants you in your seats by 12:50 p.m. for the pre-game ceremony. Game starts just before 2 p.m.

2. Big Papi Taking Over Twitter - David Ortiz will be Tweeting today via @MLB, @RedSox and @davidortiz from 8:30-10:30 a.m.. Fans can send him questions to answer and will also get the chance to see him at his house and at Fenway as he gets ready for the game.

3. Pre-Game Ceremonies - Lots of familiar faces will be on hand for the pre-game ceremonies. The Dropkick Murphys, with Keith Lockhart conducting members of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra will perform. Hanscom Air Force Base military members will line the length of the Green Monster as the American flag drops down for the anthem. If you hear noise in the sky it’s a flyover - the U.S. Coast Guard will fly a single MH-60T helicopter representing all of our armed forces, according to the Boston Red Sox.

4. Who is Pitching - Jake Peavy is on the mount for the Red Sox, Marco Estrada for the Brewers.

5. World Series Recognition - The Red Sox will be presented with their World Series rings at this afternoon’s game.

6. Honoring Fallen Firefighters - A moment of silence will be held to honor two Boston firefighters killed in the line of duty last week. Lt. Ed Walsh and Firefighter Michael Kennedy died last week battling a 9-alarm fire in Boston’s Back Bay. Both were laid to rest this week. The Boston Fire Department Quartet will perform “God Bless America” in the middle of the seventh inning.
