The Animal Rescue League of Boston adopted out 800 pets this summer, but is still 400 short of its summertime goal.

While most of us spent our summertime trying to find the quickest way to the beach, Dedham's Animal Rescue League of Boston had an ambitious goal: Find homes for 1200 animals in 12 weeks.

From June 1st to August 31st, the shelter has been participating in the 2013 ASPCA Rachael Ray Challenge, a nationwide competition to qualify for grant money.

Adoptions are already up by 100 dogs and cats this summer. But with just a few days left to go, the shelter's Dedham, Boston, and Brewster locations are still looking for homes for 400 pets.

“One of our driving priorities is to save more lives,” said Mary Nee, President of the Animal Rescue League of Boston. “In addition to finding loving homes for the animals in our care, we want to help more people experience the amazing love and devotion of a shelter pet.”

Nee said adopting a cat or dog from the ARL will make a big difference in the lives of animals in need.

“Not only will you save the life of the pet you adopt, but you also save the one that will take its place in the shelter, along with countless others that will benefit from the veterinary care and rescue services Challenge grant money will help us fund," she said.

To finish the challenge with a bang, the ARL is hosting an "Adopt-a-thon" on Saturday, August 31st at all three of its locations, including Dedham, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., there will be adoption discounts, free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, giveaways for adopters, and a taco food truck on site.
