Start Saving your Styrofoam Now!

The Town of Dedham will
hold a Styrofoam recycling event on Saturday, December 28th from 8:30am-12:30pm at the
Dedham Middle School front parking lot located on Whiting Avenue. The intent of
this event is to capture Styrofoam from holiday packaging, which can’t be
recycled with our municipal hauler. The Town contracts with ReFoamIt, based in
Leominster, MA to recycle Styrofoam, which is not recyclable through the Town’s
curbside pick-up. ReFoamIt takes this material and recycles it by using a
densifying machine that compacts the Styrofoam, which is made of 98% air and 2%
plastic, removing the air. This product is then sold to be remanufactured for
use in boats and car bumpers. Last year this event diverted a couple hundred
pounds of Styrofoam from entering the landfill! This is critical since it takes
over 500 years for Styrofoam to decompose in landfills.

This event is free for
residents with proof of residency required. Non-residents will be charged
$10/car load.  Acceptable items include any foam with the recycling symbol
6 in the triangle and with PS underneath it. Packing peanuts are not accepted at this event, but can be
taken back to a UPS store for re-use. For a full list of what is and is not
accepted or for more information about this event, please visit
www.dedham-ma.gov/environment.
