HESSCO Elder Services, which services seniors all throughout Norfolk County, warned that "temperatures of 90 degrees and above can cause heat stress [for seniors] especially when the humidity is high."

HESSCO recommends the following to avoid heat stress:

  • Drink cool, non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages.
  • Rest
  • Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath.
  • If possible, seek an air conditioned environment. If you don’t have air conditioning, consider visiting an air conditioned shopping mall or public library to cool off.
  • Wear lightweight clothing.
  • If possible, remain indoors in the heat of the day.
  • Do not engage in strenuous activities.

In addition to staying hydrated, wearing light clothing and staying indoors, the also suggested people:

  • Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors, and use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles. Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
