Slip Slidin' Away

Spring is coming, but that doesn't mean we need to stop ice skating.

You work hard, but your to-do list never seems to get any shorter. Now it's time to take a break and enjoy yourself.  It’s your time. Take it.

Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier.

I know everyone will agree it’s nice to see the beginning of spring. I’m enjoying walking outside without being bundled up. My son has even broken his bike out now that the streets are clear. The picked up the last of the Christmas trees last week, so winter seems to be officially over.

I will not miss the snow, or the cold, or the school cancellations. But there is one part of winter which I already miss: ice skating. I am not a good skater. I never played hockey, never even roller-skated as a kid, let alone learned to ice skate. But as an adult I’ve discovered that I love skating. I get an adrenaline rush in a fairly safe environment, and I get exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise. When I go skating with a girlfriend, we can actually have complete conversations as we circle the rink over and over again.

It’s easy to think of skating as a kid's sport, but I think it’s a great escape for us adults as well. Some rinks have closed for the winter, but the on the VFW still has public skating every day. If you can make it on a weekday, you’ll find you have the rink to yourself. If not, grab a friend for a couple of hours on Saturday or Sunday. You might have to contend with the songs of Kiss 108, but as you glide along the ice you can escape everything else.
