Nominate a Mayor of Dedham Candidate and Help Local Charities

The winner of the 2012 crown will split fund-raised dough between a charity of their choice and Parks and Recreation.

Update: The nomination period is now closed. Thank you for your suggestions. We will launch the voting phase of the Mayor of Dedham election in the next couple days.

We at Dedham Patch are teaming up with the to revive the Mayor of Dedham - with a couple of twists.

As in the past, we're looking for someone who screams Dedham, is proud of the town and is involved. It could be someone who volunteers their time, a member of the business community, a teacher or educator or anyone who is involved in the community. You know who makes this community great and we want to hear about them!

That's where you come in. We are asking readers to make suggestions for who you think should be honored as Mayor of Dedham.

We do have two rules. First, anyone who is a current office holder cannot become the Mayor. This means no members of the Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee or Planning Board, for example, nor can the Town Administrator, Town Clerk, Treasurer, etc. cannot be nominated. Members of un-elected volunteer boards and Town Meeting members can be nominated.

For example, Peter Reynolds could be in the running (it's his twin brother that's the selectman), or Marie-Louise Kehoe since she is a former selectman.

Secondly, our most important rule is to keep it positive. After we get nominations we are going to ask people to vote and comment why they think their candidate should be elected. We ask readers to offer any positive thoughts on their nominee but to refrain from posting anything negative about any of the other candidates. Any negative comments will be deleted.

And finally, the top two nominees after the voting phase is over, will then get out the vote, asking friends and family for $1 per vote. The person with the most votes after a month of campaigning will win.

And that, is our final twist to this tradition. The winner will split the fund-raised cash between the Parks and Recreation Department and a charity of their choosing.

As we move forward, we will provide more details, but for now, all we want are nominees. Who do you think should be Mayor of Dedham? Let us know your nominations in the comments section below

If you ever wanted a "true blue" friend and neighbor then Mary is your gal. She was the first neighbor to welcome my family into our new home in Riverdale 42 years ago and remains the same kind, sincere, giving neighbor today. Our lives in Riverdale and all of Dedham have been so enriched by this "Irish Blessing" who is so deserving of this honor. We've always called her the "Mayor of Dedham", it is time she was named officially. Good Luck Mary, you're so deserving of this honor. Kathy Baron

Tom Burnham April 24, 2012 at 08:48 PM
My vote is for Mary Hathaway. i have know her for over 54.5yrs. She is a compassionate mother, grandmother and one woman that would do anything for you. She has a heart of gold and a strong spirit. She lives, breathes and supports Dedham to its fullest. She was always there for me when I fell down and needed a bandaid. She was there to give you some sound advice, she was there when you needed someone to talk to and she was there to watch over you when your mother was out. She was the Mayor of Mass Ave and she would make a great Mayor of Dedham because "she is always there for Dedham". Tom Burnham formerly of Mass Ave Dedham.

I would also like to nominate Mary Hathaway. Mary has been volunteering in Dedham for more than 50 years. Mary continues to volunteer her time to the Riverdale School, the Boosters Club,Town Meeting, and to the needs other senior citizens in the town. She truly deserves the honor of being Mayor of Dedham.

I too, nominate my mother Mary Hathaway for Mayor of Dedham. She has put her 10 children through the Dedham School Systems and continues to be an active 84 year old member of the Community. Although I currently live in New Jersey, I am fully aware of what goes on in Dedham on a daily basis. This is purely due to the fact that my mother sends me the Dedham Times regularly, highlighting what is going on in Dedham and what she thinks I should know about. Her involvement in the community over the years has shown her to be a self-less individual. Let's give her the recognition she deserves, the recognition that she has never once asked for. A tribute to a life-long citizen of Dedham-Mary Hathaway for Mayor.

IMR - I don't live in Dedham! (I think you knew that). But I'm active in the community and have an active voice. I'm also a Square Business Owner. By the way - Hi Steve!
Pat Cronin April 30, 2012 at 02:50 PM
Mary Hathaway is so deserving of this honor. She has raised a wonderful family and continues to be involved in the community. She's one of the first people I met when we moved to Dedham more than 40 years ago. She is still a wonderful friend and role model. Mary, we'd like to honor you for all you have given to the town of Dedham! Pat Cronin
