'Memory Making' Irish Bread Perfect St. Patrick's Day Treat

Surprise a neighbor and your family with a fresh loaf of Irish bread for St. Patrick's Day.

There’s something to be said about baking up great Irish bread from a recipe handed down for a generation.

My mom has been making it for over 20 years. She pulled this one out of a newspaper decades ago. Yes, it tastes delicious and smells wonderful when it’s cooking, but there’s also the nostalgia part of it. That connection I have with my mom who has made this many times for me growing up and now she makes it for her grandkids and I also make it for my kids and my friends. It’s a special thing to be able to share and connect that way.

Last year we were invited to a party and I thought, what to bring? The cliché bottle of wine? Instead I decided to bring Irish bread to my friend, Jeannette. She was so genuinely excited and told me that it was her favorite bread. I was so happy I took a few minutes to pop the ingredients in my Mixmaster and bake it for her!

When making Irish bread around St. Patrick’s Day, I’ll consider our family across the Atlantic. I’ll pick up the phone and call County Cork and wish everyone a Happy St. Paddy’s Day as I know they’ll be hitting the pubs and celebrating with a few pints. I’ll be thinking how my daughter Katie will be visiting Ireland for the first time for her 16th birthday later this summer.

Food does that. It makes memories. It brings people together. It takes you down memory lane. So, I hope you’ll make this bread, share it with your kids and someday just maybe when they’re full grown, they’ll show up at your house and share it right back with you!

Today, why not double the batch and make two and surprise an elderly neighbor, or a friend you’re thankful for? Don’t forget to bring them some butter and drop it off while it’s still warm from the oven.
