The Libyan dictator was reportedly killed after revolutionary forces overwhelmed his hometown.

U.S. officials confirmed Thursday morning that Libyan Dictator Muammar Gaddafi had been captured and killed in his hometown of Sirte. 

Unconfirmed reports early Thursday claimed that Gaddafi had been killed after revolutionary forces overwhelmed his hometown of Sirte, according to Boston.com.

Earlier this year, a news report claimed that Gaddafi personally ordered the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988.

The plane exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, and resulted in a total of 270 fatalities, including that of Dedham resident Julianne Frances Kelly, a college student who was 20 at the time of the attack.
