Escape to Maycomb, Alabama, circa 1960

Sometimes you don't have to leave the house to escape to a different world.

You work hard, but your to-do list never seems to get any shorter. Now it's time to take a break and enjoy yourself.  It’s your time. Take it.

Often when we think about escaping we think about a physical escape – taking off for the beach, a night on the town, or some sort of pampering. But sometimes the best escape can come right in the comfort of your own home. There’s nothing like curling up on the couch and losing yourself in another time and place with a good book.

This month Dedham is participating in a national program to encourage reading and promote community, called “One Book, One Dedham.”  The idea is that we all read the same book at the same time, leading to discussions in book clubs, libraries, coffee shops and at other events around town.

What better book to spark discussion than the classic “To Kill A Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee?  I loved rereading this book a good 20 some years ago. The characters and conflicts were even more rich and complex than I remembered, and it was fascinating reading it now from the perspective of a parent. I literally couldn’t put the book down.

"One Book, One Dedham" is sponsored locally by the and D-LIT, the . There will be events throughout the month, including a kickoff Monday night at the , and a Southern Tea on Tuesday, April 5 at the . The is offering the book at a 20 percent discount if you want to own a copy, or you can take advantage of our wonderful libraries to borrow one. Either way, I hope you’ll escape to Maycomb, Ala. with Scout Finch and me.
