Signs Pointing Positive for Dedham Square Grant Application

Rumors are swirling about Dedham's application for a grant to revamp Dedham Square, a project several years in the making. A posting on selectmen Sarah MacDonald's Facebook page said Dedham received the grant. However, a town official said while all signs are pointing to the positive, no official word from the state has passed down to Town Hall.

The grant for roughly $1.2 million would pay for a major construction project for Dedham Sqaure, including new sidewalks and street lighting.

The Dedham Middle School will host a four-week evening class session beginning Oct. 25. The courses include:

  • MS Word Basic Applications
  • Newcomer Cha Cha Cha
  • Introduction to Jewelry Making
  • Cake Decorating
  • Calligraphy
  • Flower Arranging: Basic Tools and Techniques
  • Screenwriting for the Beginner
  • Understanding and Caring for Individuals on the Autism Spectrum
  • Estate Planning and Living Trusts
  • Strategies for a Market Recovery
  • Newcomer Waltz
  • Zumba
  • MS Excel Basic Applications.

The deadline for registration is Oct. 22. Cost for each program varies, but ranges from $20 to $80 for the four weeks.

Dedham's Andy Lawlor asked and received permission from the Board of Selectmen to hold his National Gaurd pinning ceremony in November at Dedham Common. Lawlor will officially receive his promotion to colonel. Lawlor cited the common's history as a training ground for Dedham's militia in the 18th century as his reason for wanting it there.

Town Hall Meetings Tonight

The Board of Selectmen will vote on two contracts tonight at 6 p.m. One will be with the police lieutenants and sergeants union, and the other with parks and recreation workers. Following the selectmen's meeting, the School Rehabilitation committee, chaired by Andy Lawlor, will meet and update the public on progress at the construction site of the new Avery School.
