At around 9:43 a.m. NSTAR was doing a routine circuit check, at the intersection of High Street and Eastern Avenue, when a manhole blew-up which resulted in the loss of power on High Street in Dedham Square.
"We were investigating the manhole because we were looking at the future work of Dedham Square," Barry Salvucci, representative of NSTAR told Patch. "But while it was going on, it took the circuit out."NSTAR work crews are currently on the scene hoping to repair the damage "before lunch time."
No one was hurt.
The majority of the businesses are closed, but Mocha Java and Cafe & Fresh Bagel are open.
In the meantime, Dedham Police placed "Stop" signs on each intersection in the square to help guide traffic.
Update: Power was restored at 10:55 a.m.
