Atticus Finch is Coming to Dedham

You work hard, but your to-do list never seems to get any shorter. Now it's time to take a break and enjoy yourself. It's your time. Take it.

It seems like every few weeks I’m in awe of another great event going on in Dedham, and next week is no exception.  A few months ago I wrote about Dedham’s participation in a national program to encourage reading and promote community, called   Dedham residents came together at a variety of events in April to discuss the classic To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.

Next week, the will cap off the series with a performance of the climactic court scene from Lee’s novel.  This is the classic scene as Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson, a black man accused of assaulting a white woman. It’s an interesting examination of race and class which raises questions that are still quite relevant today.

What better way to think about these issues than with a live performance in a historic courtroom? Fiddlehead has assembled a top-notch set of actors to perform the scene and they’ve been preparing for months. They’re eager for the opportunity to enact the scene in such a realistic setting, with an audience to serve as jurors.

The performance should last about 45 minutes and will be followed by a discussion. If you look closely, you just might see Scout hiding in the audience, eager to hear her father  stand up for an innocent man, even when it’s not popular to do so.
