Are You Dreading School 'Vacation?'

Usually "vacation" week is anything but relaxing if you're not going away. But with a little help from the Dedham Community House you can get a break while your kids are on break.

You work hard, but your to-do list never seems to get any shorter. Now it's time to take a break and enjoy yourself.  It’s your time. Take it.

Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier.

I hate to break it to you, but school vacation week is next week. I know your kids are excited, but if you are anything like me you have a growing sense of dread. How can we manage to get our own work done while finding something for the kids to do that’s structured and fulfilling? Talk about needing an escape!

One solution is to get the kids out of the house so you have your own space or can go to work yourself. Our own (DCH) has a great February vacation camp where your kids will have fun doing arts and crafts, woodworking, sports, and camp games. The camp is designed for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade, and there’s a sibling discount. Kids can go for one day or the full week.

My kids have always loved the DCH programs. They have a nice arts and craft space, a big indoor gym, and the staff is great about trying to get the kids outdoors when weather permits.

So, now that we’ve got the kids taken care of, how will you escape? I recommend you see The King’s Speech before it leaves the . This is probably the last week the movie will be here in Dedham Square. If you don’t work during the days, you can drop the kids off at DCH and then make a day of it – catch lunch and a movie in the Square before going back to pick them up at 4.

If you do work during the day, find another mom who wants to see the movie and go together to a 7 p.m. show during the week – your partner can take care of dinner and bedtime that night!
