A Chocolate Treat Quickly Devoured

Congo Bars are a historic favorite - and rightfully so.

Three ingredients are all it takes to find yummy chocolate gooey heaven!

Today, we’re talking Congo Bars. These are the easiest and most delicious bar cookies you can make. They will get devoured. These homemade bars were a childhood favorite. They were so coveted that, after baking, my grandmother hid them in her bedroom so they’d at least survive the dessert table and not get scooped up in gluttonous secrecy.

I’ve seen people make “Congo Bars” by whipping up chocolate chip cookie batter and spreading them into a 9 by 13 pan, but I promise you these are not Congo Bars, at least not the ones I remember as a kid.

This is another great way to bring your kids into the kitchen. No eggs, no flour, no butter. A small amount of measuring, mixing and spreading and you’re done.

Grab your kids and the ingredients below (maybe some ice cold milk to help wash them down) and spend some time together mixing up this special treat.

Congo Bars:

  • Two 14 ounce cans sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 cups (or one 13.5 box) graham cracker crumbs
  • One 12 ounce bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Batter will be thick and sticky. Generously grease a 9 by 13 glass baking dish. Evenly spread mixture into greased pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Remove from oven. Let cool completely. Cut into bars.

Tip: Wet hands with water and press bars into pan using the palms of your hand. This helps distribute the sticky batter quickly and evenly in the pan.

Note: Add a cup of chopped walnuts, if you desire.
