5 Things To Do This (Holiday) Weekend: July 1-4

Celebrate Independence Day with patriotic T-shirt making, parades, fireworks, baseball and firefighters.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend.

Dedham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit and new bars/restaurants/shops to explore.

  1. Family 4th of July T-shirt Making
Where/When: Friday night, at AC Moore and your own house
Why go: Ok, so this is not an organized event, but it’s a good idea and you’ll be glad you did it. First, go to AC Moore and buy some red, blue and silver fabric paint, and a white T-shirt for everyone in your family. (This is not just for kids!)  Ladies, if you are as particular about your T-shirts as I am, you might want to use one you already have, or get a nicer one somewhere else. Then, set aside a half hour and allow everyone to create their wearable masterpiece. I promise these will be a hit for years to come, and you will have created your outfit for Flag Day parade almost a year in advance!
Pricing: $10-20 depending on how elaborate you get and how many shirts you make
Tip: put a piece of cardboard inside the T-shirt to make it easier to paint/write on

  2. Red Cross Family Fun Day and Blood Drive
Where/When: Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Why go:  Sponsored by the and Dedham Firefighters Local 1735, this blood drive and family event is held in honor of 30-year veteran Dedham firefighter Henry “Henny” Dietzel, Jr., who passed away in 2006. Donors will receive a Dedham 375 T-shirt, and the day will be filled with activities including face painting, free ice cream and a cookout. What a great way to celebrate summer and honor Dedham firefighters!
    Pricing: Free.

  3. Needham Fireworks Celebration
    Where/When: Sunday, 5 – 10 p.m., at in Needham (92 Rosemary St.)
Why go: Because you don’t have to drive into Boston to see great fireworks! Beginning at 5, they’ll have food and children’s entertainment such as face painting and pony rides. From 7-9:15 The Reminisants, an oldies band, will perform, and once it’s dark you can enjoy the fireworks spectacular!

Get your race on at 5 p.m. with a Firecracker 5K. And the evening is capped off beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a fire truck and antique car procession, leading to the full parade. I know, it’s no Flag Day, but it will be a lot of fun!
