Dedham Mall Stores Close Due to Roof Collapse Fears

A call came in Monday morning about the possibility of a roof collapse at Sears.

Town building and engineering employees worked alongside firefighters Monday to evaluate and help secure a roof at one of buildings at the Dedham Mall on Monday.

An emergency call came at 8:45 a.m. in several areas, Chief William Cullinane said at the scene.

Firefighters worked to clear the roof, which Cullinane estimated had up to 5 feet of snow on it.

"There are dropped ceilings in a lot of places inside," he said.

Cullinane said a faint odor of gas was found in, next to . NStar crews arrived at the scene at around 10:30 a.m.

"There are HVAC units on the roof, and sometimes they're covered," Cullinane said. "Sometimes those pipes get compromised [during snow removal]."

It was unknown Monday evening if several stores at the Dedham Mall would re-open Tuesday.
