Business Spotlight: Plato's Closet

Plato's Closet will be opening soon on Washington Street in Dedham.

Plato's Closet, 622 Washington St. in Dedham, hasn't officially opened yet but has already received a lot of response from the community.

The store isn't a consignment shop because they give you cash on the spot for your lightly used clothes. Plato's Closet is also looking to buy certain DVDs and books  that fit in the young adult genre to sell.

Patch decided to talk with store owner Ting Yeh to ask her how the response from the community has been and what made her decide to open up a business in Dedham.

Dedham Patch: What made you decide to own your own business?

Ting Yeh: Growing up in a retail setting (my parent's have owned a Play It Again Sports store for around 20 years) has enabled me to really get to know the behind the scenes of owning a retail business.

After graduating college I pursued my major - which was Finance. After six years in Finance, I decided to make the big jump, and go in to retail because I wanted to become an entrepreneur and be able to get a real sense of accomplishment from all my hard work. Making the decision to become my own boss, and be in control of my future is an exciting adventure. The experience has already been so rewarding thus far!

Dedham Patch: How has the response been since you opened?

Ting Yeh: We have been getting a very positive response from all the customers coming into the store - asking us when our grand opening is.  Eager to purchase things already! (Since we cannot sell during our open to buy period) Everyone seems to love our concept, and are very excited that Plato's Closet has finally made it to MA!

Dedham Patch: What are you hoping to see/accomplish in your business?

Ting Yeh: I am hoping that the business will be successful, and also hope to expand to other areas of MA as well.

Dedham Patch: It's Back-to-School season, any shopping advice for students and parents?

Ting Yeh: My advice is to definitely come shop at Plato's Closet to not only save money and get 50%-70% off current name brand clothing and accessories, but to also sell us your cool clothes and accessories and get cash on the spot. Plato's Closet's unique green concept of recycling clothes benefits the whole community.

Dedham Patch: What advice would you give to someone who wants to open their own clothing store?

Ting Yeh: My best advice is to be patient and work hard to overcome all obstacles. If you truly believe in what you are doing is right, then you should never give up. Be confident and go with your gut feeling.
