Business Spotlight: Fazenda Coffee Roasters

The company is all about roasting the best specialty coffee in the area.

Not many know that for the last year some of the best coffee was being produced right on Sprague Street, and that's because Fazenda Coffee Roasters just opened up its doors about a year ago.  However, they are already providing speciality coffees to restaurants like Davio's, Clio and Scampo, but to also teach their employees how to make an amazing cup of coffee.

What makes the company unique is that their focus is not just on selling their coffee, but also loaning equipment to local businesses to serve.

"This version of the company has been in business for four years but this is the first year that we have been self-sufficient," owner Phil Schein said.

Before Fazenda's was paying someone else to roast their coffee.  However, for the last year they have been able to roast their own coffee in their new factory location on Sprague Street.

"We have a really good team here," Schein said.  "And because we know that it's us dealing with the coffee- we're able to do things the way we want to."

The company is also very committed to buying from farms that have a high level of sustainability and fair trade.  Fazenda roasts beans from countries like Costa Rica, Columbia, and Brazil. Schein is also excited that the company is able to offer special roasts for every business they work with.

"We try to buy the best beans available from many different countries and we roast them to a profile that best suits our client's menu or taste," Schein said.

Eventually, Schein would like to offer coffee tastings and educational programs  for the community.  For now, their coffee is available to purchase at Whole Foods Market in Dedham and they have their own cafe in Jamaica Plain, but they are focusing on wholesale in the meantime.

"You love to do everything- but everything takes time," he said. "And we've come a long way... but we have a long way to go."
