Easy Ways to Conserve Energy Around Your House

Brian Kearney, CEO of Neponset Valley Construction gives advice about how to save energy (And money) around the house.

With temperatures dropping and winter closing in on us, it's important to refresh your memory on easy ways to save energy and money on your utility bills.

1.) Lower your thermostat. Giving up as little as one to three degrees will make a big difference in your bill and you can easily add a sweater or wear your favorite slippers. Close off the heat to rooms in your home that  you don't use every day so your don't waste your heat in places you don't use it.

2.) Unplug electronics that aren't in use or use power strips. Appliances in "Sleep" mode are still draining your energy and costing hundreds of dollars each year.

3.) Decrease the temperature on your electric water heater to 120 degrees and turn it off completely when you go away for the weekend.

4.) Keep your refrigerator stocked because it takes more energy to cool an empty one. Make sure the coils are clean and set the temperature to between 37 and 40 degrees. If your refrigerator is more than ten years old, considering replacing it; older models can use three times as newer ones.
