Judy Moody Day Brings Popular Children's Books to Life

Dedham Square event offers fans an advanced screening of new movie "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer."

Dedham Square grew "moody" Saturday.

Judy Moody fans joined Peter Reynolds, illustrator of the popular children's book series, at a slew of events celebrating the big-screen premiere of Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer

featured an advanced screening of the film at the , a book signing party, a parade and live performances of scenes from the Judy Moody series at the .

The Dedham Board of Selectmen declared Saturday as Judy Moody Day during its May 19 meeting. Reynolds recognizes the event encourages creativity and learning for children.

"I'm hoping this sets the theme for the summer," Reynolds said. "It's certainly not going to be a bummer summer in Dedham."

Roughly 300 people attended the Dedham premiere of the Judy Moody movie at the Dedham Community Theatre. Reynolds, owner of , said seeing real-life versions of the books' characters was an amazing experience.

"For me to see the characters come to life in the movie this morning has been a dream," Reynolds said. 

Reynolds hosted a  party at The Blue Bunny following the movie. The party included cake, Judy Moody memorabilia and a book signing by Reynolds.

In addition, a raffle gave attendees a chance to win a piece of actress Heather Graham's jewelry worn in the film. The Blue Bunny raffled a bracelet worn by Graham in her portrayal of Judy Moody's Aunt Opal in the movie. 

Dedham resident Susan Hoffman has worked at The Blue Bunny for nearly six years. Hoffman said Judy Moody Day has offered a fun opportunity to locals.

"Today has been fabulous," Hoffman said. "Everyone looks like Judy Moody in a good mood."

Reynolds led a Judy Moody-themed children's parade from The Blue Bunny to the Fiddlehead Theatre following the party. 

Lisa Rivera and her daughter Rebecca marched proudly to the Fiddlehead Theatre. Rivera said Judy Moody Day has been a success for the town of Dedham. 

"There's been a lot of fun stuff today," Rivera said. "All of the kids have smiles on their faces, which is great to see."

The Fiddlehead Theatre Company presented Judy Moody Books on Stage following the parade. Parents and children filled the theatre to see famous scenes from the Judy Moody series. 

Fiddlehead Theatre Company Producing Artistic Director said the live performance helps the audience understand the themes of the Judy Moody series.

"We've used scenes that help capture the spirit of Judy Moody," Fofonoff said. 

Fans can see Judy Moody in theaters when Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer launches nationwide Friday.
