"As a Dedham resident, I had to get involved in something that was in my own backyard," Cormier said.

Cormier creates original acrylic, watercolor and oil paintings and greeting cards as a part-time artist. The Dedham resident emphasized the importance of creative people coming together.

"It's great to talk to people who share similar interests and do what you do," Cormier said.

But artwork spread beyond the canvas as attendees were treated to visual and performing arts as well. Actors from performed scenes from "Romeo and Juliet", while artists developed sidewalk creations outside the .

"We've been busy," Klatsky said. "I can't believe how many artists have shown up."

Dedham offered out-of-town artists the opportunity to showcase their talents as well. Watertown artist Monica Fairbairn said the event has been successful in the early stages.

"It's wonderfully organized," Fairbairn said. "Everyone has been helpful."

Fairbairn has created handmade jewelry for three years. Fairbairn said gatherings like the DOS event help define her role as an artist.

"It seems like I'm definitely qualified to be an artist," Fairbairn said. "I love the creative process."

DOS received support from the 375 Committee, which is charged in overseeing the year-long celebration of the historic anniversary- and the open studios event could shape the town's future.

"Dedham has a reputation as a hip place," Dedham childrens book author and illustrator Peter Reynolds said. "This gives us a great opportunity to showcase Dedham's talent."
