Local Residents Sound Off on New VFW Park Way Bike Lanes
What do you think of the idea for new bike lanes on the VFW parkway?
The City of Boston will soon install bike lanes and sharrows along VFW Parkway between Spring and Centre Streets, leaving local residents with mixed views of the new plan.
While many believe the new lanes are much needed for West Roxbury residents to safely ride into Boston, others believe they will be too dangerous.
Along with the plans the city will also add new marking are also slated for Baker Street from newton to the Parkway. The markings won't reduce the number of traffic lanes or eliminate any parking, according to the city's announcement. (See how the new lanes will connect with the current network).
On Patch, the following was posted about the bike lanes:
Westie Guy: WHY?
Jack Litwinsky: This is BIG news!! Maybe Hubway will help us now? About time. Welcome to the real world. thank you whom ever Its a very good development
Gary Chase: I bike to work from West Roxbury every day, so this is interesting news. I'll withhold judgement until I see the lanes. The VFW is very bike unfriendly right now. It's like biking on a curvy Mass Pike and the sidewalks are so bumpy from tree roots that they are not really an option either. I look forward to seeing how they come out.
Kristina: I agree with Jack. This is BIG news. I really look forward to seeing how this comes out. @Westie Guy - there are tons of bikers out there. Also, wouldn't it be great to see kids biking to and from school?
Robin: Nice idea. Would love to see children riding bikes. I'm concern with this roadway b/c it already has many car accidents. Would rather see improvements with sidewalks which are large enough for people to ride or walk. If we are going to use bike lanes , have lanes that are separate and cars are unable to drive on , like in Europe.
Dash Riprock: Maybe the should run them up the J Way at the same time . Actually Gary, there isn't as much room as you would like. It is a sideWALK.. Not side bike path. Dagger lurks at the side streets dumping traffic out onto the Parkway without regard for stop lines. I have lived two doors off the Parkway for 24 years and traveled it for 40. This is a very poor idea. Check the scars on some of the Oak trees. Those are from cars. Spandex biking outfits provide slightly less protection. Stay on Huntington Ave. one ass ache street is plenty. SEE MORE from Dash.
