Commuters Say Dedham is Riddled With Traffic

Dedham residents sound off on traffic in town.

From the Westwood and Norwood lines all the way to Boston, commuters say it’s a nightmare driving through Dedham during rush hour.

Whether it’s Route 1, 109, 135,  Dedham Square or the Bridge Street/ VFW Parkway intersection, commuters battle long waits and congestion.

Patch reader Dale Meyer-Curley expressed displeasure with several roads in town.

“Riverdale, Riverdale, Riverdale. That intersection at Bridge St/109/VFW Parkway/Spring St, West Roxbury is HORRIBLE,” she posted on Facebook.

Sheila Fitzgerald, another Patch reader said it took her almost a half hour to get through Dedham Square  one morning driving down route 135.

Dan O’Neil of Dedham said the 135 stretch of High Street and the 109 stretch of Riverdale are “terrible” at 5 p.m.

A recent data map on Patch, showed that it takes commuters 45 minutes to an hour for people to get to work from several areas of Dedham.

Nationally, the number of people traveling more than an hour to work rose to 11.1 million in 2012. That’s up 300,000 from 2011. Which is bad news, because extensive travel times are linked to an increased risk of developing high blood sugar and cholesterol, depression, anxiety and a feeling of social isolation.

Christine D Fay of Dedham said there’s no winning for commuters at rush hour.

“All of Dedham is riddled with traffic,” she said.

Tell us: How long does it take you to get to work?

It's damn near IMPOSSIBLE to get anywhere near the Dedham/ Norwood line at any time of day!

Traffic is very tough, and it spills out onto roads that really aren't meant to support it (High, Common, Bridge, East, Sprague). It's not just commuter traffic either. There's only so much that can be done about that given the fact that 95 and Rte 1 are controlled by the state. But we have so much retail on Rte 1 that it draws customers and workers from all the surrounding towns, making Rte 1 a nightmare and clogging up the secondary roads. The town should seriously consider looking at zoning on Rte 1 to reduce the amount of traffic. BJs. Best Buy. 4 different grocery stores in a single mile stretch? I know retail is a quick fix for the tax base, but it seems to cause more headaches than its worth.

Going from Oakdale to Islington at 6PM is absolutely crazy. The back up on East Street Dedham and East Street Westwood is enormous.

I live in Riverdale and my sister lives in Greenlodge/Oakdale area. It can take me up to 25 minutes to get to her house sometimes. I have now taken to getting on 95 at Great Plain Ave and getting off at East Street just to avoid the town streets. All this betterment of Dedham has created a traffic issue that I dont think was thought of when in the planning stages.

I have waited over 20 minutes just to make a left hand turn from route 1 onto route 109. In the 2 years that I have lived in that area of Dedham it is only getting worse.

Just thought I would point out that both Dale is female. Betting Shelia is as well. Personally I do not commute thru Dedham. I hit 95 / 128. When I did have to go thru Dedham to Boston to commute I rode a bicycle.

I think Lisa is correct. Legacy has been more successful than the planners thought - especially the restaurants which keep the place super busy all day long. I'll be those were almost an after-thought during the planning. Bridge Street is it's own little nightmare, driven mostly increased population of professionals trying to get to 95. But the intersection of VFW and Rte 1 is a mess everyday. I think the town needs to think long and hard about what it wants to be in 5 years. There's only so much that can be done about people trying to get onto 95 (aside from perhaps restricting truck traffic on certain roads), but there is definitely something that can be done with zoning to reduce the amount of traffic on rte 1. Less retail and more office space is a start. Less congestion on Rte 1. Fewer people driving to their big box stores from Needham, Westwood, West Rox, Roslindale, Hyde Park and Milton. I mean, look at BJs on a Saturday. The amount of traffic that place dumps onto Rte 1 and Eastern 7 days a week is huge.

I just hope the town planners don't think the solution is more and bigger roads. If all the work on 95 shows us anything, it is a band-aid at best. And it seriously deteriorates the quality of life in Dedham

But, hey, at the dead end of Mills and Matthews (they are both dead ends that meet), there is a police detail for the crew digging a hole making sure all the traffic keeps moving efficiently. ugh, brutal...
