The Boston Conservatory Launches New Children's Theater Programs for Next Generation Performers – Registration Open Now, Classes Start January 25

The Boston Conservatory is bringing its world class training techniques to the next generation of performers and young artists. The Conservatory is launching a new set of children’s theater programs, beginning January 25, 2014. The programs, Page to Stage and Sing-A-Musical, will run on Saturdays for eight weeks and are open to children in grades one to five.

These programs, part of The Boston Conservatory’s Extension Programs, aim to introduce children to the performing arts in a safe and fun environment, backed by the expertise of experienced theater instructors. Peyton Pugmire, Associate Director of The Boston Conservatory Theater Division, will serve as the artistic leader of the new programs. Pugmire brings years of experience to the programs, having previously served as the producing artistic director of the award-winning Watertown Children’s Theater and the president of the Consortium of Boston Area Children’s Theatre.

“Our mission is to give young students an experience that fosters a sense of initial creativity, growth, self-esteem and teamwork,” says Pugmire. “These classes are meant to focus on the group and how individuals can work together to create a beautiful piece of art.”

Page to Stage is open to children in grades four and five and serves as an introduction to the basics of theater. The class can hold up to 20 students who, as a group, will adapt a children’s book into a play and, ultimately, perform the piece, complete with costumes and props. Children will learn basic playwriting, acting techniques, design and theater games.

Sing-A-Musical is open to children in grades one through three. The class can accommodate up to 30 students, who will learn several songs and choreographed dances from a child-friendly Broadway musical, and will perform the works with props and costumes. Children in this class will be taught the basics of musical theater, singing, dance and theater games.

“Some children’s theaters really emphasize product while others really emphasize process,” says Pugmire. “We go for the well-balanced middle ground—the best of both worlds with both a sound, traditional understanding of theater and a fun overall experience.”

Registration for both the Page to Stage and Sing-A-Musical programs is open now via The Boston Conservatory website’s youth enrichment programs page: www.bostonconservatory.edu/youth-enrichment-programs. Each program is $300. Registration closes January 10, 2014. Classes for both programs will be held every Saturday from January 25 through March 22, with no class on February 22. All classes will be held at The Boston Conservatory, 31 Hemenway Street.
