The Mother Brooks Arts and Community Center, located in the historic Avery Schoolhouse in Dedham, is offering classes for the community this fall. The classes will be taught by local business owners, MBACC resident artists, and experienced arts instructors.
Felting

Learn the process of working with roving wool, hot water, soap and a lot of elbow grease to create a unique bowl or vessel. Felting has been used for hundreds of years in many cultures to create clothes, shoes and even housing. Wool is affordable, plentiful and beautiful. It's rewarding to work with your hands in amazing colors and textures while creating a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

IPhoneography Workshop
Instructor: Dennis Stein
Learn about apps and techniques that can be used to reach new levels of creativity for iPhone photography. This one-day workshop includes a walking tour of the area to shoot photos, followed by an indoor session to review, edit and share your photographs on social media. Students must have an iPhone and an iTunes account. We will download free apps during the class.

Creating a Meaningful Series
Instructor: Martha Wakefield
Develop your graphic language by creating a series. Learn how to create a comprehensive body of work that explores an idea, form, visual sensation or feeling; explore and expand on a concept through variation on a theme; develop a personal expression and signature style. We will do painting exercises to support creating a series. Class time will allow students to paint with individual attention. Each session ends with a critique and class discussion. Watermedia.

Letterpress Holiday Card Workshop
Instructor: Colleen Ellse, Letter & Lark
Just in time before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season! During this letterpress workshop, students can pick from four holiday designs to letterpress print greeting cards on the Vandercook press. Students will learn to cut envelope liners to finish their festive note cards. Each student will leave this workshop with a set of 25 holiday cards to mail to family & friends.

Monotype:The Painterly Print / Off Print Techniques
Instructor: Paula DeSimone
Students will create one-of-a kind prints on rice paper. They will be introduced to the delicate methods and materials used in the hand printing process. We will work in nontoxic water-based inks on plexiglass plates to print images in black and white. We will explore both traditional and nontraditional techniques. Bring a bag lunch.

How To Use a Sewing Machine (ages 10+)
Instructor: Bettie Kilcoyne
This is a great workshop for anyone who has a sewing machine but is intimated by it. Learn how to use a sewing machine, including: threading the needle, making a bobbin, changing the needle, reading a pattern, and proper cutting method. Bring your own sewing machine, or rent one from the studio for a small fee. Teens & adults are welcome to attend.

Multimedia Creations (ages 5-7)
Instructor: Lynda Davis Jeha
Children will draw, paint, build, collage and create a different project each week using a variety of materials. The class will have fun experimenting with different materials and create a wide variety of pieces. Possible projects include atissue paper water lily collage, a dragonfly magnet, art trading cards and more. All materials and supplies will be provided.

Painting and Drawing (ages 8-12)
Instructor: Lynda Davis Jeha
This class is great for children who love to draw and paint. The theme will be animals and environments. Students will use watercolors in addition to materials such as oil pastels, colored pencils and markers. This class will explore realistic and abstract approaches and experiment with color, form, line and pattern. All supplies will be provided.

Creative Classroom (ages 2-5)
Instructor: Elizabeth McKenna, owner of Morning Playtime
The goal of the Creative Classroom is to provide a fun filled creative environment. We will provide open-ended activities focusing on the process, not the product. The materials provided will engage the children in areas of sensory play. We will have individual as well as group projects. This will be a great way to socialize, work in a group and have some fun!
