Here are five things you need to know Tuesday, Oct. 1.

1. Sen Rush office hours: The federal government may have shut down, but State Senator Mike Rush and the state government are still working. Stop by Rush's Dedham office between 9 and 10 a.m. Tuesday to catch him during office hours.

2. Dedham schools pushing back against bullying: Over on his Patch blog, Joe Kilroy has the story of Dedham Middle Schools work in addressing and ending bullying in the school. It's a great read.

3. Tryouts are ending for girls softball: clinic The Dedham Girls Softball League will host one more tryout for the coming pitching clinic. Head over to Sugrue Field Sunday, Oct. 6, from 2-3:30 p.m.. What's at stake? A chance to learn fast-pitch softball.
