Dedham Student Named National Merit Semifinalist

5 things to know for Thursday, Nov. 7.

1. State Senator Mike Rush (D-Norfolk & Suffolk) recently co-sponsored a piece of legislation known as the PAWS Act, which would increase fines and penalties against animal abusers as well as create an animal abuse registry.

“When we hear horrific reports of animal abuse in the news, it presents an opportunity to revisit existing protections in state law and examine their efficacy,” said Sen. Mike Rush. “If there are ways we can prevent this kind of mistreatment by strengthening our laws, it is incumbent upon us to do so. I am pleased to have co-sponsored this common-sense and appropriate legislation to further protect vulnerable animals.”

3. Timothy Cunningham, a 12th-grade student at Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, R.I., has been named a Semifinalist in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. Cunningham, a resident of Dedham, was among 16,000 academically talented high school seniors chosen from an initial group of 1.5 million high school juniors from more than 22,000 high schools across the country who entered the prestigious competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

4. The New England Foundation for the Arts announced that Robert A. Brennan of Dedham has joined the organization as staff accountant.
