Dedham Dancers Perform in Annual Recital

It was the 23 annual performance, held each year at Dedham High School.

The month of May for Beth Florentino, her daughter Lea, and hundreds of girls around town, means only one thing - the Annual Dedham Recreation Department Dance Recital. For eight months out of the year (September to May) dozens of girls and boys have toiled in classes, held almost every day of the week at the Dolan Center. Each May, the children (some as young as 3 years old) from pre-K through grade 12 take their talents to the stage of the Dedham High School. It's time to show the whole town what you've learned and how far you've come in ballet, jazz, tap and hip-hop. Beth Florentino, herself a dancer and proud member of DMA  Chapter 5 and DTCB, instills the same hard work and pride in to her students that she has learned over the …

Arts Center in Sprint to September, But With Hurdles

The Mother Brook Arts and Community Center is full-steam ahead, but a couple things could derail the project.

In the grand scheme of development projects, what members of the Mother Brook Arts and Community Center are trying to do is like an Olympic-speed 100-yard dash. Kids moved out of the former Avery Elementary School on April 23, and MBACC leaders want artists painting, sculpting and teaching by September. "This is something that could be so unique to Dedham and be so unique to [East Dedham] - part of the efforts we are involved in to revitalize this area," said Joe Heisler, a supporter of the project and Mother Brook Community Group member. MBACC, formed in early February as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, is busy raising funds and in search of volunteers to move the project forward. Moving the arts center forward at such a quick pace would fulfill…

Spring Strawberries and Cream on Biscuits

Pair fresh strawberries with sugar, cream and buttermilk biscuits for a delicious Spring dessert.

"One must ask children and birds how cherries and strawberries taste." ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe I noticed the other day that our strawberry plants are beginning to grow and I already can't wait to pick them fresh from the garden. They are much smaller than the berries you get at the supermarket but they are sweeter and tastier. I immediately began to crave strawberry shortcake. I stopped at the market and found some nice red ripe strawberries but there were no packages of shortcakes in sight. I thought about making my own (nah, too lazy). I looked at the angel food cake (nah, not one of my favorites). Then I wandered over to get the cream and there was my answer...buttermilk biscuits. Just pop open the can, throw 'em in the oven and …

A 'Fantastick' Show Hits High Street

The Fiddlehead Theatre will put on The Fantasticks this weekend.

The Fantasticks, a legendary Broadway hit, is just perfect for the intimate setting The Fiddlehead Theatre's High Street space offers, the theater's artistic director Meg Fofonoff says. The eight-member cast will debut the show Friday at 8 p.m. The story brings classic elements into its plot - from two lovers finding love, to a villain that tries to get between them and a damsel in distress. "It is a real portrait of what theater is all about," says Fofonoff. "It is about fantasy versus reality - which is what being on stage is all about." The fathers of the two lovers are attempting to bring the young man and young woman together, as they pull light-hearted pranks on each other. "They are just going to bring down the house [with their …
