YOUR TURN: Would You Turn Off Your Cellphone During Dinner for a Discount?

One restaurant in L.A. is offering a 5 percent discount to patrons who ditch their phones during their meal. Would you like to see this in the nearby area?

Face it, if there was a way to grow a third arm specifically to hold your cell phone, many of us would jump at the chance.

But running counter to the "can't live without a connection" population is one restaurant in Los Angeles that is literally paying customers to keep their phones away from their meal, according to the Los Angeles Times

Eva Restaurant in L.A. is offering diners a 5 percent discount on their bill if they dump their digital devices before being seated, according the L.A. Times.

Is this something that you'd like to see happen at any of the nice restaurants in the nearby area? Or does the idea of ditching your phone during dinner start to make you twitch?

Tell us in the comments section.

I love discounts, so I'd do anything for one anyway. But I do love the idea of ditching the phone to dine. I cringe when I look at a table in a restaurant and see multiple people typing away at their phones. Totally defeats the purpose of doing out together! Engage! Be present!

People should not be allowed to use their cell phones at restaurants. It is rude to the staff and rude to their fellow dinners. We always survived without them in the past, why can't we take an hour off from them?

FYI: All-Season tree company here in Stoughton thinks he is entitled to every tree job here in town. He is very expensive and when I did not give him 3 big jobs he became nasty and bitter with me on the phone. Has anyone else had issues with this guy?

If my daughter was with us, no problem. Without her I would want to keep it on just in case a sitter needs to talk with me.

What did people do before there were cell phones? That right, let their sitter know the name and number of the restaurant they would be at. I have worked in restaurants all my life and trust me when I tell you if a sitter called looking for a parent with an emergency we would find the parent.

Why would i give the number to a restaurant so i can have them call, wait hold possibly and then have find someone to find me when they can call my cell and get me right away? That seems silly.

Angela, I will tell you why, because it is rude to be talking on your cell phone in a restaurant where people are paying to have dinner and some time away. Nobody wants to hear your conversation. It is also rude to the waitstaff to be chatting away when they are trying to serve you. I am taking it you have never had to work in this situation and don't know how rude it is.

I have children and am on call every 3rd to 4th week at work. I take it you have never had responsibilities that follow you whereever you may go. I dont have to be held back and sit in my house like a hermit. Hence I take my phone and answer it if needed.

By the way, i dont even know the last time i have used my cell phone at a restaurant, i just dont think that its all that rude in some circumstances. If its someone just chatting it up that is one thing but there are many cases where people need to have the phones nearby.

Actually, I have young children and 2 jobs and plenty of responsibilities that follow me everywhere. I just know when it is appropriate and when it isn't to use a cell phone.

I dont think it is rude. They could have a reason. An important work call, a friend or relative that is ill. Just sitting on it chatting or texting, ir one thing but, to say All people that bring their cell phone into a restaurant are rude is not fair at all.

If you are an MD or PD, FD or EMT personnel, phones on buzz are OK....followed by a polite excusing self from other diners to take an emergency call in a private area. Truly don't care to hear all about a stranger's life..whether I'm in Walmart, at a ball game, in a restaurant or elsewhere. If all cell users were considerate of others, there'd never be a problem.

I always worry that a child or older relative will need me, and immediately. That I would not get the call from assisted living that my aunt was on her way to the emergency room...Yeah, we lived without them, but once we lived without forks or napkins. But an restaurant that offered a discount is offering a choice. I might say "No, thank you." but choice is good. (I do turn the cell phone ringer off at church of course.)

I have had my cell phone for 5 years, use it very rarely. To be honest, I don't like it because I seldom talk on the phone (usually my daughter and we use the "land line" for the most part. My phone is not a "smart" phone (wouldn't know how to use one anyway). I have never leearned how to turn my phone on or off. The battery just dies, I recharge & ask my son to turn it on. I've never text anyone, don't know if my phone can do that. Don't know if it takes pictures, and, just found out that there are 2 games on the foolish thing. Never bothered to play them because the printing on the directions is so bloody small I can't read them!!! I've lived most of my life without one, but, my family insists I have one for an emergency (like having a phone will help me, most likely the battery will be dead, anyway). The young can keep their technology. I still do math with paper & pencil, read with a book. I guess I'm proof that you can't "teach an old dog new tricks". I'm lucky I can even use this foolish machine (its over 7 years old & I still don't what it's capable of doing).

I am in the same category as Fiscal Conservative but unfortunately the rest of the world does not think it can live without a phone, whether dining or driving. People can't even buy a loaf of bread without calling home first to discuss it. People in a restaurant should not be talking on the phone ,they can text if their dining companions don't object.

I could honestly care less what the person at the next table is doing as long as its not disruptive. I don't care if some one has a phone or doesn't, text or talks (in a average tone) on a phone, has a napkin in there lap or is using the proper folk, if they had the chicken or fish. I really don't care about why the person on the other side of the restaurant is texting.

Now with that said if a person is being disruptive and yelling into the phone, the phones ring tone is extremely loud, or is generally talking to loud I do find that rude. If some one is talking on a phone in a calm normal voice how is it any different than them talking to the person across the table in the same tone? Either way I'm not going to eavesdrop on them or care less how they choose to spend there time.

I also find it rude when I'm out to eat with a person and they are more concerned with what's going on with people around us and not focusing on me or the group.

I am with you on this. I am very surpised how much people care about what is going on around them vs at their own table. I am out to enjoy time with my family and/or friends.

I guess it is ok then to be rude to the people working at the restaurant. Do you know what it is like to be a waitress and be taking an order and have somebody on their phone waving their finger at you to "wait one minute"? Then when you walk away have them yell at you to come back because they said to wait not to go away. Do you know how it feels to be waiting on a table and have somebody say into their phone "oh hold on a second there is some girl here for my drink"? Obviously not. I work too hard to be treated like that but as long as they are on their cell phones they have no idea what is going on around them.

I do know how it feels I'm in a type of service indrustry and have had to deal with someone talking on the phone or blowing smoke in my face from a cigarette. But the cell phone didn't make the person rude. The people with that type of behavior are generally rude to start with. If its not the phone it's your not quick enough, you interrupted the conversation, you walked in front of the bar tv that is showing the pats game, and etc. The type of person that you used for an example is a very negative person anyway and your not going to win with them no matter what. But just because I had to deal with one or two people who were using there phone rudely doesn't mean that everyone with a phone is rude.

I think it is a great idea. Everyone loves a discount. I have noticed that many times when I am out to dinner, I am constantly looking at my phone, texting other people... it takes away from the person I am with.

Can't anyone go anywhere any longer without one of these foolish things? Man, I must be a dinosaur, because my life doesn't revolve around technology. It's no wonder today's students rank so low in knowledge throughout the world. They can manipulate video games, text and talk. Yet, they can't read, write, spell correctly or do math without the aid of a calculator. Says a lot for the sorry state the country is in and what the future holds for the USA. Thank God most of my days are behind me.

Just an offbeat question..Cellphones have been around for what...10-15 years or so?...Who exactly decides what cellphone ediquet actually is?...Is there a cellphone law book..out an about? So let me get this straight.. someone says it's bad manners to text or talk on the phone at the table in a restaurant, but it's ok for a nursing mother to whip out a boob and feed a child in a restaurant? Funny how things sometimes work. Well...is there a written code of ethics when it comes to cellphones?

Just me! It is ok for a mother to feed her child anywhere. If its ok for you to eat in a restaurant you bet its ok to feed a child. I cannot stand when people talk negatively about breastfeeding.

I feed my child anywhere. I get very offended if someone were to suggest to me that, in a place where people are EATING, that my child should not be permitted to EAT.

As far as cell phones go, I am not a huge cell phone user myself. I put my phone on vibrate when I am in a place such as a restaurant or a doctor's' office, excuse myself, and take the call or answer the text outside.

I see some comments made are by some VERY Self Centered people who believe they can do as they please, where they please and be darned about anyone else. Civility, manners and most importantly COMMON SENSE is lacking. These people, who do not see anything wrong with disrupting another's dinner should eat at McDonald's. It's always loud there.

While I'm against using the cell phone at the dinner table, I don't get one argument.

Why is someone talking on a cell phone at a table near you and more distracting than that same person talking with the person they are sitting with? Either way they a talking- why is to the person in front them fine, but to the person on the other end of the line rude? Either way, it's a conversation they are choosing to have publicly.

I mean, a group of eight people sitting and chatting at a restaurant is usually far louder and far more distracting that one person sitting and chatting on his or her cell phone. Why is one thing considered rude, the other acceptable?

Awesome post...you hit the nail on the head...If your in a booth....you usually cant see the people around you..but you hear them......so it really shouldn't bother the people around you if you want to use the phone...however...the people who are sitting with you at the table enters a different realm.. The question is...if you were home..would you talk on the phone if you were entertaining....Yes...yes...yes....the "Common Sense" thing.......there is always the voice of reason amongst the pesters in the blog......

If you're in a restaurant where the conversation level is high to begin with, and it's LOUD, then I have no problem with people using their cell phones. If the restaurant is quiet, and the conversation level is low, then people shouldn't be using their cell phones. I'm not going to flip out on someone using their cell phone at TGI Fridays if it's super loud in there to begin with. PLUS if people bring in screaming, crying kids, then who cares if I'm talking to my friend on a phone. It's Romper Room in here for God's sake!

I would gladly give up my cell phone to enjoy dinner with my wife, my friends and my family. A cell phone, a smart device or both... we can live without them for a few hours! Having incentive would make it better.

If you are planning some tree work here in Stoughton here is some advice: call at least 3-4 tree companies to get estimates. The prices on a $1000 job can vary $200-300 between these tree companies. Just because someone has been around the town for many years does not mean he is the cheapest and the most knowledgeable.
