Warren Should Focus on Brown as a Republican To Win, Local Democrats Say

After three polls released last week showed Elizabeth Warren ahead of Scott Brown, while another showed Brown ahead of Warren, Patch surveyed influential Massachusetts Democrats to get their take on the tight race.

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren should focus on Sen. Scott Brown's Republican affiliation and continue to tie him to the national GOP during the final stretch of his campaign: that's the main finding of this week's Blue Commonwealth survey of influential Massachusetts Democrats.

Three polls by three separate polling organizations showing Warren ahead of Brown—but barely—were released early last week.

Further illustrating how tight the race has become, hours after Patch sent the survey out to Massachusetts Republicans, another poll by UMass Lowell and the Boston Herald showed Brown ahead of Warren by 6 points, with a 5.5 percent margin of error, after an UMass Lowell/Herald poll nine months ago had Warren leading by 7.

Almost half of the influential Massachusetts Democrats that Patch surveyed, 48.2 percent, said that Warren's reported rise in the polls is most likely attributable to a post-Democratic National Convention bump that energized Democrats and left-leaning independents, while 29.6 percent attributed it to other factors, such as grassroots strength and voters "learning more about both candidates."

Those surveyed expressed confidence in the efficacy of Warren's get-out-the-vote organization compared to Brown's, with 37 percent saying it's "much better" than Brown's and 40.7 percent saying it's "somewhat better."

Reach Out to All Demographic Groups

The Western New England University (WNEU)'s Polling Institute's poll last week showed Brown leading Warren among male voters 49-44, while Warren led among female voters in the same poll 55-40. Asked which strategy Warren should focus on regarding the gender gap, influential Massachusetts Democrats were split: 37 percent said she should focus on cementing and extending her lead with female voters, 25.9 percent said she should try to make gains among male voters, and 33.3 percent voted "other."

In the "other" responses, some Democrats said Warren shouldn't focus on one demographic or another and go after voters from both groups, with one respondent adding that in focusing on both groups, Warren should be "providing a message that meets the needs of all, not some."

Asked how Warren could win over either male or female voters, some respondents focused on the 'War on Women' theme used by Warren's campaign to cement and extend her lead with female voters.

"Remind women that if Brown wins and the Republicans take back the Senate, it will be bad for women on reproductive issues, women's health, and workplace issues," one respondent wrote. "And that Brown tried to bully Warren during the first debate and obviously feels intimidate by smart, successful women, since he keeps sarcastically referring to her as 'The Professor.'"

Other respondents urged Warren's campaign to focus on economic issues, such as taxes and bills such as the American Jobs Act, and contrast her stances on those issues with Brown's, while connecting Brown to the national GOP's stances on the issues.

Define Scott Brown as Republican, Not Independent

Asked what should be the primary issue that Warren should focus on during the final stretch of the campaign, most of the survey respondents said that Warren should go after Brown for his voting record, which respondents described as "not independent" and "consistently with the Republican right wing."

Some respondents said that in defining Brown as a Republican, the Warren campaign should also emphasize the possibility of Republicans controlling the Senate, while others said Warren should focus on contrasting her views on economic issues with Republicans' views.

"Republican economic policies gave the middle class almost a decade of stagnation, followed by an economic collapse from which we're still recovering," one respondent wrote. "Once again, the GOP 'solution' is more tax cuts for the super-rich. We tried that, and it didn't work. Scott Brown says he's independent, but he only acts that way when it's easy. On the hard votes, on the important votes, Scott Brown toes the party line."

Brown and Warren had their first debate of four last week and most of the respondents leaned towards the debates deciding the race, with 59.3 somewhat agreeing it would be the deciding factor in the race and 18.5 percent strongly agreeing. Another 18.5 percent were neutral on the impact the debates would have on the race.

Red and Blue Commonwealth Survey
Our surveys are not a scientific, random sample of any larger population, but rather an effort to listen to a group of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders, candidates and elected officials in Massachusetts. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in Massachusetts’ Patch surveys, although not all responded to this story’s questions. Answers have been edited for style, but not for content.

Patch will be conducting Red Commonwealth and Blue Commonwealth surveys throughout the 2012 election season in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and progressives on the ground in Massachusetts. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in periodic surveys that last just a few minutes, contact Associate Regional Editor Daniel DeMaina at danield@patch.com.

Patch is a bit left leaning, but not terribly so. The bazillion ads you see with the Obama family are no doubt paid for by the Democrats. Occasionally you see Mitt Romney down in a corner someplace, but the Republicans are probably putting less money into this type of advertising.

Romney feels he can't take Massachusetts. The two races important to Republicans are the Brown vs Warren Senate race and the Bielat vs Kennedy race for representative. Very important that we all get out there and vote.

hey, Romney is not doing everything. He has no experience in foreign experience. He's not talking about what he'd do with Afghanistan. He's not even standing up for the families of our soldiers killed in the line of duty. One Republican senator is holding up that bill. Do your homework. Romney cares nothing about our soldiers.

why aren't you talking about Scott Brown's racist and sexist attacks on Elizabeth Warren. They are bogus and a diversion from him having to talk about the issues and remind people that he's indelibly tied to Romney/Ryan and deadend Republican policies.
These kinds of attacks are an old tactic and often effective. Except this time the Brown's Republican puppet masters messed up.
What Scott Brown is doing in attacking Elizabeth Brown is 'race baiting' just like Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond, and George Wallace.

No, but anyone of the EBT card holders that received a voter registration card with their correspondence thanks to Tin Lizzy's daughter, can return it signed - NO QUESTIONS ASKED - and vote on 11/6 - whether or not they are US Citizens, which of course, is a requirement to vote in the US - BUT ONLY IF SOMEONE CHECKS AND NO ONE DOES - you merely sign the form 'swearing' that you are a citizen. Do you think for a minute someone wanting to beat the system gives two hoots about their 'sworn' statement? These are the same people that claim they are seeking work while collecting unemployment and that their disabilities prevent them from doing anything but sucking off the teet that is the pig known as the US Government.

When I query a voter registrar on the discrepancy that it was not possible. When I showed her the data. She said that the is less than a 5% error.

Agreed, the media and the polls are left leaning. In Coakley's case, the Boston Globe says it all. Either the sample was mostly Democrats or the Globe made up a number they thought would discourage those who might vote for Scott Brown.

Martha Coakley. Scott Brown because he blitzed every tv in the state with Republican lies and distortions. Ain't gonna happen again. He's up against a feisty woman. By the way, Professor Charles Fried of Harvard Law, a Republican (!!!) says that Elizabeth Warren got accepted as professor at Harvard "on merit." http://content.usatoday.com/communities/onpolitics/post/2012/05/elizabeth-warren-native-american-scott-brown-/1#.UGTgyo7iOQI

Scott Brown doesn't want to talk about the issues because it reminds people he is a Republican. It gets people remembering how he voted against their interests in favor of conservative Republican position. So he goes on the attack. Too bad Scot. You don't have a leg to stand on now. Chump change.

Emcee of Seekonk

12:29 pm on Thursday, September 27, 2012

@paul... I think it is safe to say that Seekonk has .001 voter fraud, and that would be mostly because of the way we vote: one voting place and all precincts in the same room. Now when the Emporiums for the Elderly are built, the number might move to .002.

"Nursing homes/elderly vote Republican so don't worry about it..." I certainly hope so, especially in Florida.

And for the record, I think everyone 18+ should have an ID. I think it's already law and I know that cops can lock up a person until they figure out for sure who they are. It only takes a second to flash an ID and everyone should have one that steps into any polling place in America.

My opinion on voter ID is this. The left claims that voter ID is a right wing attempt at voter suppression. I think the left does not want voter ID because it is in the Democratic parties best interest to keep certain classes of people living in the shadows. And make no mistake about it. This is modern day bondage.

Just like credit card companies shortening their grace period to 25 days, so now there are more than 12 billing cycles in a year, note that on your statement they are called billing cycles and not months anymore. You see no matter what roadblocks gov't throws up to thwart capitalism, capitalist always find away around it like Obamacare - companies will simply pay the fine instead of providing healthcare, unions like your beloved SEIU all have waivers, non-profits and universities - the cesspools that spawn liberal thought pattern - all are exempt - who are the chumps here? Not the needy, they pay nothing and get thousands upon thousands in return - make $50k - you're screwed - $100k? Doubly screwed, $250k? - well you are a 1% and will definitely pay, unless of course you are a union hack or public servant, school teacher, cop or employed by a non-profit (see above) - you are protected by your messiah.

Anybody that fakes their ethnic background, in order to advance their career, deserves to be tomahawked. She is a white fraud that used affirmative action as a stepping stone. Any regular person would have been fired for lying instead of put on a pedestal for being the "first woman of color" at Harvard.

Gretchen! You refer to Occam's Razor but fail to apply the principles advocated by Occam.
BTW As a Florida State Seminoles and Atlanta fan, I whoop and do the chop as I perform a war dance in support of my teams. BTW I am ~1/4 Mayan indian who never got or asked for a free lunch from the US taxpayers unlike the so called Native Americans who fought on the side of the British during America's War of Independence and in the War of 1812.

I am so tired of this ignorant and false comment being repeated over and over even though the FACTS have come out. The only fraud is you perpetuating a fraudulent statement. Get your facts straight if you haven't bothered to by now.

Ken, open your mind, this state has FAR too many Adolph Hitler democrats. Gore lost 86% of the real estate was NEVER ahead. Every illegal alien, every criminal felon, every illegal voter couldn't put him ahead. He would have apologized to OBL for putting our buildings in front of their hijacked planes. That's the type of leader you want?

You obviously work for the government. Get a life and get your facts straight. Syat with the NY Times and Washington Post and then check out their facts with Fox News. A quick scan of BBC for world news will make you an informed person in less than 20 minutes/day of your own time.

The only Fact is that she has no Indian heritage. When asked to provide some she can't. When the real Cherokee Indians ask to meet with her she won't. She used a faked story to advance her career. How she can look into a mirror and rationalize that she is "a woman of color" is beyond putrid. The delusional Moonbat just see's Democrat and that person gets their vote. Sad!

Well that's the Michael Graham version, Now try reading the truth about why the parents eloped and how the entire family was brought up with the same stories and beliefs. You do realize your seeking documented proof for Indian nation births circa Oklahoma territory, right?

Scott Brown "She checked the box" "saying she's a woman of color and clearly, (simpering shrug), she is not." TILII....when do you drop the hate that blinds you.
Note that people like you are using words like "Moonbat" and that this side of the debate isn't. I don't even know what a moonbat is? It sounds like a made up term. Like "Tomahawk chop" --there is no such thing in Native American culture. It was made up for the "Washington Redskins." Just their name is an insult to Native peoples.

Professor Warren, if you are really a Cherokee, at least one ancestor of Cherokee blood, you should check the Dawes Rolls.

You do not have to rely on stories told to you by your ancestors.

Real?! Sorry, but this is another example of the Republican alternate-reality.

Check this out: http://www.pennlive.com/editorials/index.ssf/2010/01/acorn_voter_fraud_claims_are_p.html

This quote from the story sums it up: "As many organizations on both sides of the political aisle did, ACORN paid its employees $1 per new voter registered. While most workers did their jobs and lawfully registered new voters, a few defrauded ACORN by filling out the registration cards themselves and turning them in for the dollar.

In nearly every instance, it was ACORN that discovered the fraud and called it to the attention of election authorities.

The inescapable conclusion to which the evidence leads is that if there is fraud involved with ACORN’s activities, it is being perpetrated by those knowingly making false accusations against the organization."

Did you get the last line? The people guilty of fraud are those claiming it where it doesn't exist!

I have a Republican state rep, mayor, most of the city councilors, neighbors hereabouts. The Attleboro area is rife with Republicans.

Indiana, that is a bogus argument. One that people like you always fall back on. It's a plea that I have addressed before.

Vote the candidate. Republicans have no back bench. They have run flub-a-dub candidates in the past (Peter Blute, a guy who was cross-dressing in his office, etc.) Put up some solid candidates and I'll vote for them. I have in the past. But they are all so far to the right right now, that I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole.

Believe it or not I have voted democrat 90% of my life for over 30 years - not anymore, I am disgusted with the dems lately - lies upon lies(i know it happens on both sides) . I certainly trust Brown over Warren...Obama just seems to be campaigning instead of running the country for the last 4 years - just think it was too soon for him. You are accurate that there is not much on both sides. We end up voting against a candidate than for a candidate

Not his original name. President Obama's mother married Lolo Soetoro, her second husband, and her son Barack kept his original name.

Why is it that the oppostion didn't play with the original names Leslie Lynch King and William Jefferson Blythe III both of whom are former presidents? Could it be that they are both white and without any association with Muslims?
