Town Hopes Humps Help With Whiting Hill

Officials agreed to put in two speed humps as a traffic calming measure on Whiting Avenue.

If drivers looking to cut through between Hyde Park and Providence Highway don’t slow down, their ride will get a bit bumpier.

Officials announced Tuesday that the town will install a pair of speed humps near a hill on Whiting Avenue between River and Walnut streets as neighbors aim to cut the average speed (31-33 mph) down closer to the limit (20 mph).

“If a person doesn’t heed the speed hump warning signs, they are going to have some discomfort on the ride, but it’s not going to do any damage,” town engineer David Field said Tuesday. “But they will remember the next time they come by, hopefully.”

Each speed hump, both temporary for 3-6 months, will be staked down and allow drivers more stopping distance as the town hopes to avoid a tragedy.

“If it is working, we can recommend a permanent installation,” Field said. “It’s very similar to what’s up in Riverdale right now.”

A 2011 traffic study found that drivers often don’t have enough time to stop if something – or someone – jetted out into the roadway.

Dedham has tried signage and a digital speed reader, but officials said those measures have not been very effective.

“There more of a stopgap measure. We are hoping that this is definitely going to offer a much safer street for the residents of Whiting Avenue,” said former Dedham Police Chief and selectman Dennis Teehan, whose daughter lives on the hill.

“There just isn’t enough time for cars to stop given the average speed. There are too many blind driveways on either side [of the hill]. You really take a risk every time you go to back up out of your driveway,” Teehan said Tuesday evening.
