Capitalizing on a new bylaw passed at May's Town Meeting, several stores received permission Thursday evening from the Dedham Board of Selectmen to open as early as midnight on Black Friday - the top shopping day for many stores across the country.
Before this year, stores caught open early would be fined $50 - and that fine still applies if the store didn't seek selectmen approval.
Each applicant had to fill out a questionnaire created by Dedham Police Chief Michael d'Entremont. In each case, d'Entremont recommended the stores hire police details.
Police also recommended that parking lot lights be turned on two hours before stores open.
"We hope everything goes safe for everybody and you have good business," said selectman Jim MacDonald. "The goal is for you to have a successful night."
