The Dedham 375 Committee met Thursday night and discussed several requests and the overall yearlong event. The committee approved a $700 request toward the Dedham 375 Coloring Book as well as $500 toward marketing materials for Dedham Open Studios.
Tom Clinton, director of the Dedham Youth Commission, spoke to the committee and showed the layout of what the proposed coloring book will look like. He noted that the cover will include the newly designed logo created by Dedham resident Steve Davey.
Clinton explained that high school students in Dedham handled all the artwork and that the printing would be done by Blue Hills Regional High School to keep costs low.
Also, he said that the there was already a blueprint laid out for the coloring book since it was done 25 years ago for the town’s 350th anniversary celebration.
“The good thing is that we don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” Clinton said as he displayed the layout of the past coloring book.
A couple examples are drawings of the town seal, Avery Oak, Dedham pottery and the Fairbanks House. Clinton said that the drawings will be a bit infantile with lots of white space so children can color them.
The committee will print 3,000 copies of the coloring book.
The book will allow kids to learn about Dedham’s history in an artistic way, Clinton said.
At Clinton’s request, the committee voted to sponsor the North Star Ramble, an annual children’s running race. A coloring book will be bags for each participant, Clinton said.
“I think these are wonderful projects,” said Mary Louise Kehoe, co-chair of the committee.
The committee also discussed the Dedham Open Studios event, which will be held on May 15. The committee approved to take part in it and gave $500 for marketing purposes. Artists from Dedham are encouraged to take part. Also, artists from surrounding towns can take part for a small fee.
The event will take place at various locations around Dedham. Some will be in studios, homes or designated public locations. Artists who want to take part in the event must submit by March 15.
